CES 2015, Las Vegas
The International Consumer Electronics Show, commonly referred to as CES, brought 170,000 people to sunny Las Vegas last week from January 6-9. Tech companies, media, buyers, sellers, and even a few celebrities came to the 2.2 million square feet conference, filled with 3,600 exhibitors. Even Shaq made an appearance at CES, showing off Monster Products new waterproof speaker.
Every year for 4 days, CES becomes the global hub of innovation and wacky inventions. President and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Gary Shapiro describes CES as “the center of convergence among content, services and products, combining to create amazing new technologies to improve our lives and entertain us.” This years conference lived up to the expectations, and we loved being smack-dab in the middle of all the madness.
Flixel & Panasonic USA
Flixel was happy to be a part of the Panasonic USA booth, creating 4K cinemagraphs with the Lumix GH4. CES followed on a similar trend from 2014, where 4K was once again the hot topic. 4K TV’s and monitors could be spotted every few steps, and every manufacturer had their own spin on why their approach to 4K was the best. Panasonic is leading the industry with the widest portfolio of 4K products available, including new palm-sized consumer camcorders, wearable cameras and 4K broadcast quality VariCams, tablets, and digital signage.

Our booth within Panasonic was set up for the creation of fun, personalized cinemagraphs. With a colourful, active rainforest backdrop and a bright orange kayak, attendees were invited get on site and paddle their way to their own living photo. Take a look at Panasonic USA’s Flixel account for more kayak cinemagraphs created at CES 2015.
CES 2015 Highlights
With so much to explore, we’ve managed to compile a short list of the highlights and coolest gadgets of CES 2015.
Are drones and selfie sticks the evolution of videography and photography? At the very least, they were both hot topics at CES this year. Though selfie sticks are not a new invention, in 2014 they became one of the hottest consumer tech commodities. Referred to by some as the “narcissist stick”, these magical wands allow selfie enthusiasts to capture the moment without having to ask a nearby stranger to take the shot. If CES 2015 is any indication, it looks like selfie sticks are here to stay.
Drones, though also not a new invention, are being used in new and cool ways. The definition of a drone draws on one main point- they are pilotless, unmanned aircrafts. From delivering food and packages, to capturing stunning aerial video, the use of drones are continually evolving. For an affordable and excellent quality video drone, Parrot Bebop is a great choice. Check out this video by The Verge on the fast paced advancement in the drone industry.
When you’re out and about, be on watch for the extended arm that is the selfie stick, and the hovering wings of a nearby drone! Hazards aside, these innovations were a sure hit, continuing to improve and advance overtime.
In wearable tech, smart watches stole the show. Cheaper and less intrusive than Google Glass, companies like Garmin introduced their smartwatch. Compatible with iPhone and Android, great battery life, built in GPS, bluetooth enabled, this watch can do (almost) everything.
Lastly, it wouldn’t be a great review without mention of the Mercedes’ F 015 Luxury in Motion self-driving car. For many, driving is a tedious, everyday activity that takes hours out of their day. Not only futuristic in appearance, this concept car drives autonomously, allows for ample interior space, contains interactive touch screen interior, and is completely emission free. Mercedes pictures the future of driving as one where that hour long morning commute can be better spent with relaxation.
Overall, Flixel had a wonderful week out in Las Vegas. As always, CES was a pleasure, and we’re already looking forward to next years new crop of inventions. For more on Panasonic, check out their CES 2015 website.
